This is a personal blog. Not personal in the sense that it’s private and I’m not going to bear my soul and share my darkest secrets. It’s about recording a personal journey and the lessons I learn along the way.
I began using the internet for serious business purpose in the mid 90’s. I was one of the pioneers in many respects but I was way ahead of the curve. I wasn’t alone of course. There were lots of people in the mid 90s who could see the potential of the internet but we were all to a man and woman geeks of the geekiest kind. And we all learned (or at least I hope we all learned) the lesson that hitting the wave too early gets you nowhere: “The second mouse gets the cheese”; “Pioneer and disappear”.
I chose early on not to join the gold rush, preferring instead, to pursue a consulting career. That was very successful and I still do that today. But I can’t help wondering how I would have faired if I’d have joined the gold rush?
The Cheese Has Left the Building
And so, in my spare time and for fun (yes – I am still a geek) I’m experimenting and exploring some internet based business ideas. Some are purely experimental, others have genuine potential and I’m using this blog to record the lessons I learn along the way.
I’m not the second mouse. The cheese has long since gone. This is a very well trodden path. I’m not expecting to invent anything or discover anything new. But what I am doing is observing the successes and mistakes of nearly 20 years of using the internet for commerce and I’m delving into it directly. I would like to think that the lessons I learn will be useful to someone else but regardless of whether they are, I’ll be using this as a journal to remind myself of the lessons along the way.
